Kids want to tap into all this great technology we have today, so it only seems fitting that the little guys will want their own tablet PC. Some people don’t have an issue paying $500 for an iPad for their child, but if you aren’t one of them, the LeapFrog LeapPad makes a great option.
The most popular option for a tablet pc for kids is the LeapFrog LeapPad. LeapFrog has created some awesome electronics for kids and the LeapPad is the latest addition, currently retailing for about $130. The age range for this tablet is ages 4-9, but I am sure more tech-savy 2 and 3 year old kids would be comfortable using it.
One of the best selling points to the LeapPad is that it is compatible with Leapster Explorer games so if you also have the Explorer you can use the apps and games on both systems. If you have old LeapFrog cartridges lying around the house those are also compatible with the LeapPad This is an excellent selling point for many families.
The LeapFrog LeapPad comes with 3 free apps and their library includes over 100 different games and apps the enhance learning for spelling, phonics skills, mathematics, science, music, geography, and more that can be purchased separately (again, compatible with other LeapFrog products). The LeapPad also includes a stylus for your youngster to practice their writing skills. The LeapPad has a built in camera and video recorder and that is sure to be a hit with the kiddos.
Another great feature of the LeapPad is that it gives you the ability to track your child’s learning progress through an online tool called the Learning Path. You can choose to receive emails on their accomplishments that will also give you some insight into where they may need added support.
This device is also great for families in which more than one child will be using it. The skill levels automatically adjust to each child’s pace and each child’s progress is tracked separately.
One negative thing about the LeapPad is the way it eats up batteries! There is an AC adapter available but it needs to be purchased separately. It would probably be advantageous to get the AC adapter and save the batteries for the car.
